Hurricanes and tropical storms

  • How often: 26 tropical cyclone centers passed within 60 miles of downtown Orlando from 1950 to 2024, 8 of them at hurricane strength while that close. 11 of the 26 came in 2000 or later.
  • Strongest gust at the airport: 105 mph on August 13, 2004, during Hurricane Charley. Hurricane Milton in 2024 and Irma in 2017 both brought gusts near 80 mph or more.
  • The 2004 season: three storms (Charley, Frances, Jeanne) passed within 60 miles of Orlando in six weeks, two of them still at hurricane strength.
  • Before 1990: David (1979), Abby (1968), Donna (1960), King (1950) also passed within 60 miles as hurricanes.

Wind speeds here are the highest 6-hourly best-track sustained wind while the center was within 60 miles, rounded to 5 mph, so they describe the storm, not what any one house felt.

Storm reports are tagged with the nearest named place. Places with more people and airports collect more reports, so treat this as where storms were seen, not a precise risk map.

Heat and rain at the airport

  • Heat: 116 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter at Orlando International, and 19 at 95 or hotter (1996 to 2025). A closed garage gets hotter than that.
  • Rain: about 51 inches a year, with 75 days of a tenth of an inch or more. June through September brings 58% of it.

Garages by ZIP code

The Census does not count garages, so we use single-family detached homes as the closest stand-in. Built before 2000 matters because the Florida Building Code took over from local codes on March 1, 2002. Owner occupancy matters because owners, not renters, pay for door repairs.

Area names are our shorthand for the main neighborhoods in each ZIP. Census ACS 2020 to 2024 5-year estimates (tables B25024, B25034, B25035, B25003), via Census Reporter. Year-built shares are for all housing units in the ZIP, not only detached homes.

How we built this

Hurricane tracks. The NOAA National Hurricane Center's HURDAT2 best-track file (hurdat2-1851-2025-092326.txt), 1950 to 2024. A storm counts when any 6-hourly track point fell within 60 miles of downtown Orlando (Lake Eola). Hurricane means its best-track wind was 74 mph or more at one of those points.

Storm reports. Every thunderstorm wind report for Orange County and its neighbors Seminole and Osceola, along with their hail and tornado reports, from the NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database bulk files, 1996 to 2025. A wind day is a date with at least one report. Reports come from trained spotters and the public as well as the National Weather Service, so more people means more reports. NOAA adds events months after they happen, which is why 2026 is left out. Lake County, which includes Clermont, is not in this table.

Airport weather. NOAA NCEI daily summaries for Orlando International Airport (station USW00012815), 1996 to 2025, with data through October 24, 2026. Wind is the fastest 5-second gust each day.

Homes. US Census American Community Survey 2020 to 2024 5-year estimates by ZIP Code Tabulation Area, via Census Reporter.

Limits. One airport station and a track line do not describe every street. Use this to understand the area, not to diagnose your door or your insurance coverage.
