Insulated garage doors
In Orlando an insulated door is less about keeping the cold out and more about keeping a west-facing garage from turning into an oven. It also makes the door stiffer and quieter, which helps in wind.

How hot it gets
Orlando International Airport averages 116 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter, and 19 at 95 or more (NOAA, 1996 to 2025). From June through August, most days hit 90. A closed garage with a thin steel door facing the afternoon sun runs hotter than that, and the heat moves into whatever room shares a wall with it.

What insulation does here
- Keeps the garage cooler. A foam core slows the heat coming through the door. It matters most when the garage is attached, faces west or south, or has a room above it.
- Makes the door stiffer. An insulated sandwich door flexes less than a single sheet of steel. That helps with dents and with wind, though stiffness alone is not a wind rating. Check the label.
- Quieter. Less rattle when the door runs, and less noise from the street.
- Weatherstripping matters as much. A good bottom seal and side seals keep out rain blown under the door, and the lizards and roaches that come with it.
When it is worth the money
I'd buy insulated if the garage is attached and you use it for anything besides parking: a workshop, a laundry room, a second fridge, a home gym. I'd also buy it when replacing an unrated door anyway, since the price difference is a fraction of the whole job. For a detached garage used only for the car, a plain rated steel door is fine.
An insulated door is heavier, so it needs springs sized for it and an opener that handles it smoothly. Replacing the door is the time to check both. New door installation.
Heat and the opener
Openers in hot garages work harder. Lubricant thins out and drips, rubber seals harden and crack in the sun, and the plastic gear in some openers wears faster. None of that needs a new door, but it is why an Orlando garage door wants a lubrication and a look over once or twice a year. Heat and humidity problems.
Common questions
Are insulated garage doors worth it in Florida?
For an attached garage you use for more than parking, usually yes. A foam core keeps the garage cooler and makes the door stiffer and quieter.
Does an insulated garage door make it hurricane proof?
No. Insulation makes a door stiffer, but the wind rating comes from how the whole door is built and tested. Check the design pressure label.
