Off-track door and cable repair

A door that hangs crooked or has rollers out of the track needs to stay put until a technician resets it. Cables and rollers are usually the cause, and both are routine repairs.

Door off its track

A door comes off the track when something hits it, when a cable breaks on one side, or when worn rollers and loose track brackets let it wander. You'll see one or more rollers outside the track, a gap at the bottom, or a door hanging at an angle.

Unplug the opener and leave the door alone. A door half out of the track can fall, and running the opener can bend the panels so that a track repair becomes a panel replacement.

Cables

The lift cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums at each end of the spring bar. A frayed cable looks fuzzy near the bottom bracket. A snapped one leaves the door lopsided, high on one side. Cables are under spring tension, so replacing them means unwinding the springs first. That makes it a technician job.

The bottom of the door is where Orlando cables rust first. Rain blows under the door, the slab stays damp, and the bottom brackets and the last foot of cable sit in it. If one cable broke, I'd have both replaced. They are the same age and have had the same soaking.

Rollers and hinges

Steel rollers with exposed bearings wear and get noisy, and a cracked roller can pop out of the track. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings are quieter and a common upgrade during another repair. Hinges crack along the center line on older doors, which lets the sections sag. Both are cheap parts; the work is in doing it safely around the springs and cables.

After a wind storm

Orlando International Airport records a gust of 40 mph or more on about 11.6 days a year and 50 mph or more on about 2.7 (NOAA, 1997 to 2025). A door left partly open in a gust, or one with tired rollers, can be pushed out of the track, and a door that flexed hard in a hurricane can bend its tracks or pull its brackets loose. Check that every roller is seated and the door runs smoothly before you rely on it again. After a storm.

Common questions

Can I put my garage door back on the track myself?

We wouldn't. The springs and cables are still under tension, and a door that slips can fall. Unplug the opener and call a technician.

Why is my garage door so loud?

Most often worn steel rollers or dry hinges. A loose opener chain is another cause. Lubricating the moving parts helps; worn rollers need replacing.

What causes a garage door cable to snap?

Wear and rust over time, or a broken spring that puts a sudden load on the cable. Frayed or rusty strands near the bottom bracket are the warning sign.
