New garage door installation

A new garage door in Florida is a building-code item, not only a style choice. It has to be rated for the wind load at your address, it usually needs a permit, and it should arrive with a label that proves both.

The Florida rules

  • Wind load. The new door has to meet the Florida Building Code's design pressure for your house, which depends on the design wind speed and exposure at your lot as well as the door size. The label on the inside of the door shows the positive and negative pressures it was tested to. Reading the label.
  • Permit. A full door replacement usually needs a building permit in Central Florida, and local permit forms ask for the product approval number. The installer normally pulls it and schedules the inspection.
  • License. Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board certifies garage door installation specialty contractors under Rule 61G4-15.100(1)(k). Ask for the license number and check it on myfloridalicense.com.

Choosing the door

Steel is what most Orlando houses have, and it is the usual choice for a rated door. Thicker steel and a door with reinforcing struts handle wind better. Insulated steel adds a foam core, which makes the door stiffer and quieter and keeps the garage cooler. Insulated doors. Wood and wood-look carriage doors look good on older houses in Winter Park and College Park, but real wood takes work in Florida humidity. Windows need to be impact-rated or protected, so price that before you fall for the look.

Common questions

How much does a new garage door cost in Orlando?

This Old House puts most installed doors at $1,151 to $1,869, about $1,400 on average, with two-car doors at $2,186 to $3,348 (March 2026). Higher wind ratings move the price, and so do windows.

Do I need a permit to replace my garage door in Orlando?

Usually yes for a full door replacement, because the new door has to meet the wind-load code. The installing company normally pulls it.

How long does it take to install a garage door?

Most replacements take part of a day once the door is in hand. Ordering a rated door in your size and color, plus the permit, takes longer than the install.

What garage door is required in Florida?

One that meets the Florida Building Code's wind-load requirement for your address, shown by its design pressure label and usually a Florida Product Approval number.
